Why does illness increase blood sugar?

Infection and physical stress increase hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can raise blood glucose.

Should I check my glucose more frequently when sick?

People with diabetes may need more frequent glucose monitoring during significant illness.

Should I check ketones?

People at risk of DKA, particularly those with type 1 diabetes, may need ketone testing during illness or when glucose is elevated, according to their sick-day plan.

Should I stop my insulin during illness?

Do not stop insulin automatically. People with type 1 diabetes particularly need ongoing basal insulin even when they are not eating, unless their treating team has given a specific alternative plan.

When should I go to hospital?

Go urgently if you have persistent vomiting, significant ketones, difficulty breathing, severe dehydration, confusion or worsening symptoms despite following your sick-day plan.
