What is hypogonadism?

Hypogonadism is a condition in which the testes do not produce adequate testosterone and/or sperm production is impaired because of problems involving the testes or the hormonal signals from the brain.

What is male hypogonadism?

Male hypogonadism generally refers to symptoms or signs associated with testosterone deficiency together with consistently low testosterone levels.

What causes low testosterone?

Causes may include:

  • Testicular disorders
  • Pituitary or hypothalamic disorders
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Severe chronic illness
  • Certain medications, including opioids and glucocorticoids
  • Genetic conditions
  • Previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Testicular injury
  • Excessive alcohol or substance use
  • Hyperprolactinaemia

Can obesity cause low testosterone?

Yes. Obesity is associated with lower testosterone levels in many men. Weight reduction and treatment of metabolic disease can improve testosterone levels in some men.

Can diabetes cause low testosterone?

Men with obesity and type 2 diabetes have a higher prevalence of low testosterone. Improving metabolic health may help, although some men require specific evaluation and treatment.

Can low testosterone cause weight gain?

Low testosterone may be associated with increased fat mass and reduced muscle mass. However, obesity itself can also contribute to low testosterone, creating a two-way relationship.

Can low testosterone cause erectile dysfunction?

It can contribute to reduced libido and erectile problems, but erectile dysfunction has many causes. Vascular disease, diabetes, medications, psychological factors and neurological disorders may also contribute.

Does low testosterone always need treatment?

No. The underlying cause should first be identified. Treatment depends on symptoms, laboratory results, age, fertility plans and the underlying condition.
