When is thyroid surgery needed?

Surgery may be considered for:

  • Suspicious or malignant thyroid nodules
  • Large goitre

If the entire thyroid is removed, thyroid hormone replacement is required lifelong.

After partial surgery, some people may still produce enough thyroid hormone.
