Answers to common questions about insulin.
Questions on this page
Is insulin only for severe diabetes?
No.
Insulin may be required because the body cannot produce enough insulin, because of pregnancy, acute illness, very high glucose, or other clinical situations.
Does starting insulin mean my diabetes is getting worse?
Not necessarily.
Insulin is simply a treatment. Needing insulin does not mean you have failed.
Will insulin damage my kidneys?
Insulin itself does not damage the kidneys.
Good glucose control with insulin can actually help reduce the risk of diabetes complications.
Can I stop insulin after starting it?
Sometimes—but never stop insulin on your own.
Whether insulin can be reduced or stopped depends on why it was started and how much insulin your pancreas is producing.
Does insulin cause weight gain?
Insulin can contribute to weight gain in some people, particularly when glucose levels improve from very high levels. Your treatment can often be adjusted to reduce unnecessary weight gain.
Is insulin painful?
Modern insulin pens and fine needles make injections much easier than many people expect.
