What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA is a test that measures bone mineral density, usually at the hip and spine.

Who needs a DEXA scan?

Testing is recommended based on factors such as age, sex, fracture history and risk factors for osteoporosis.

What is a T-score?

A T-score compares bone density with that of a healthy young adult reference population.

What is a Z-score?

A Z-score compares bone density with people of similar age and sex.

What is osteopenia?

Osteopenia means bone density is lower than the young-adult reference range but does not meet the usual DXA definition of osteoporosis.

Does osteopenia always become osteoporosis?

No.

Some people remain stable for many years. Fracture risk depends on more than the T-score alone.

Can a normal DEXA mean I cannot fracture a bone?

No.

Fracture risk also depends on age, previous fractures, falls, medications and other clinical factors.
