Can high calcium run in families?

Yes. Certain inherited conditions can cause abnormal calcium regulation.

What is familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia?

Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) is an inherited condition in which blood calcium is mildly elevated because of altered calcium-sensing mechanisms.

Is FHH the same as primary hyperparathyroidism?

No. The two conditions can look similar on blood tests but have different causes and management.

Why is distinguishing them important?

Some patients with FHH do not benefit from parathyroid surgery, so correctly identifying the condition can prevent unnecessary procedures.

Can low calcium be genetic?

Yes. Genetic disorders affecting parathyroid hormone production or calcium sensing can cause hypocalcemia.
