Why is my child not growing as fast as other children?
Children grow at different rates. What matters most is the child's growth pattern over time, rather than comparing them with classmates or relatives.
What is normal growth in children?
Normal growth varies with age, sex, genetics and stage of puberty. A child's height should be plotted on an appropriate growth chart and followed over time.
What is a growth chart?
A growth chart allows doctors to compare a child's height, weight and growth pattern with children of the same age and sex.
What does height percentile mean?
A percentile shows how a child's measurement compares with children of the same age and sex. Being on a lower or higher percentile does not automatically mean that something is wrong.
When should I worry about my child's height?
Evaluation may be appropriate when:
- The child is significantly shorter than expected
- Growth has slowed over time
- The child is crossing down through growth percentiles
- Height is substantially below the expected family pattern
- There are other symptoms or signs of hormonal disease
Can short parents have a short child?
Yes. Genetics has a major influence on adult height.
What is mid-parental height?
Mid-parental height is an estimate of a child's expected adult height based on the parents' heights. It provides a useful reference but cannot predict final adult height exactly.
Can nutrition affect growth?
Yes. Adequate nutrition is essential for normal growth. Poor nutrition, chronic illness and certain gastrointestinal disorders can impair growth.
Can thyroid problems affect growth?
Yes. Untreated hypothyroidism can slow growth and delay development.
Can growth hormone deficiency cause short stature?
Yes. Growth hormone deficiency is one possible cause of poor growth, although there are many other causes.
