Why is protein important?

Protein helps maintain muscle, supports tissue repair and contributes to satiety.

How much protein do I need?

Protein requirements vary according to age, body weight, activity, pregnancy, kidney function and health goals.

What are good protein sources?

Examples include:

  • Vegetarian: Dal • Pulses • Beans • Chickpeas • Soy • Tofu • Paneer • Curd • Milk • Nuts and seeds
  • Non-vegetarian: Eggs • Fish • Chicken • Lean meat

Is protein powder necessary?

Not usually. Many people can obtain adequate protein from food. Protein supplements may be useful in selected situations when dietary intake is insufficient.

Can people with diabetes take protein powder?

Some can, but the product, carbohydrate content, calories, kidney function and overall diet should be considered.

Can high protein damage the kidneys?

Protein intake should be individualized in people with chronic kidney disease. A very high-protein diet should not be undertaken without appropriate medical or dietary guidance in patients with kidney disease.

Does protein help with weight loss?

Adequate protein can improve satiety and help preserve muscle during weight loss, particularly when combined with resistance exercise.
