What is a healthy diet?

A healthy diet provides adequate protein, vegetables, fruits, whole grains or other appropriate carbohydrate sources, healthy fats, fibre and essential vitamins and minerals while limiting excess sugar, highly processed foods and unnecessary calories.

Do I need to completely stop carbohydrates?

No. Carbohydrates are an important source of energy. The type, quantity and distribution of carbohydrates matter.

Are all carbohydrates unhealthy?

No. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits and other minimally processed carbohydrate sources can be part of a healthy diet.

Is rice bad for diabetes?

Rice does not have to be completely avoided. The amount, type of rice, meal composition and overall carbohydrate intake are important.

Can a person with diabetes eat white rice?

Yes, in an appropriate portion and as part of a balanced meal. Individual glucose responses can vary.

Is brown rice always better than white rice?

Brown rice generally contains more fibre because it is less processed, but portion size and total dietary pattern are also important.

Can I eat millet if I have diabetes?

Millets can be part of a healthy diet. However, they still contain carbohydrates, so portion size remains important.

Is ragi good for diabetes?

Ragi provides fibre and nutrients but still contributes carbohydrate. It should not be considered a “free food” for diabetes.

Can I eat chapati instead of rice?

Chapati can be an option, but the total carbohydrate and calorie content of the meal still matter.

What is the best diet for diabetes?

There is no single diet that is best for every person. A sustainable eating pattern that improves glucose, weight and cardiovascular health is more important than choosing one particular food.
